오달리스크는 본디 이슬람 궁정의 여성 노무자인 궁녀를 지칭하는 단어이지만 역사와 시대가 변함에 따라 와전과 왜곡, 재해석이 겹쳐지면서 권력과 소유, 정복이라는 고정관념에 길들여져 있는 단어이기도 합니다. 하지만 예술은 언제나 아름다움을 향한 쾌락 자체를 검열하는 엄격한 관념과 의식에서 벗어나고자 저항해왔고 당대의 예술가들은 언제나 이 이국적이고 관능적인 여인의 절대적 아름다움을 포착하기 위해 집중했습니다.

이번 La Ordinaire Odalisque (보통의 오달리스크) 전에서 소개드리는 아바, 백소영, 비칠영 작가는 가장 동시대적인 감각으로 가장 클래식한 아름다움, 가장 클래식하기에 평범한 ‘여성의 아름다움’을 주제로 그림을 그리는 작가입니다. 특정한 맥락에서 권력이나 문화, 성차별적인 요소와 관련된 다양한 해석과 편향을 뛰어 넘어 아름다움을 향한 인간의 동경심과 낯선 세계에서 현실을 대체하는 대안을 추구하는 것은 예술가뿐만 아니라 전인류의 보편적 욕망이며 자연스럽고 그 자체로 아름다운 일입니다. 이 세 작가가 동시대의 여성 안에 존재하는 아름다움을 어떻게 해석하고 발굴하는지 인사갤러리에서 만나 보시길 바랍니다.

Odalisque originally referred to a court lady, a female concubine in harem but through out time, the word itself became accustomed to stereotypes of power, ownership and conquest. Conversely, art has always resisted to break away from these strict notions and traditions that censor the very pleasure of beauty. Thus, artists have always intended to capture the absolute beauty of these exotic and sensual women.

Insa gallery is pleased to present ‘La Ordinaire Odalisque’ with three special artists Abba, Baek So-young, and B70 who depict with the most contemporary sensibility on ‘female beauty’; the most classic beauty and therefore, one of the most elemental form of aesthetic. Yearning for beauty beyond diverse interpretations and biases on authority, culture, and sexism is a delightful and common universal desire of not only artists but all of humanity.
