Gorgeous Paul is a London/Seoul-based painter who draws his inspiration from the depths of his historical knowledge, personal experience, and, of course, artistic practice. His obsessive interest in ancient to modern history, especially the history of war, feeds into his practice both sublimely and directly. The regulated geometric forms on the pictorial surface and the display of each rectangle or square wooden panel are strongly influenced by studying battle formations and their changes as they manoeuvre one another. This, in fact, brings the discussion of the inevitability of human nature as the artist sees the coexistence of ‘dominant’ and ‘subordinate’ features to be an inescapable element of our nature. His ongoing Composition series are consecutive and thorough studies in conflict of dominant and subordinate elements within the pictorial surface as he carries out physically intensive action of scoring the grids onto each panel, therefore clearly visualizing these constant struggles. The artist himself sees this action as inevitable and how dominant and subordinate features constantly mingle, repel, or even devour each other delivers how vulnerable the painting is and how he is, therefore we all are. Academic interest, especially in the historical and practical usage of grids drives him forward to challenge these big themes and within the process, he constantly meditates on how he sees the world and himself.
